Calgary’s Bird-Friendly Urban Design guidelines offers design solutions and recommendations for planners, architects, designers, builders, and owners, and acts as a supplementary document to the Centre City Plan, Municipal Development Plan, and Calgary’s Environmental Policy.
The Guideline offers readers various bird-friendly strategies that align with the City of Calgary’s sustainability objectives. The guidelines list the following strategies as effective for deterring bird collisions:
Treat all glass on the first four (4) storeys to render it visible to birds, or those that are at or below tree height.
Create “visual noise” by applying decals, film, or frits, or increase density of mullions or other visual markers using 10cm spacing.
Reduce light pollution by integrating Lights Out initiatives or adopting screens/curtains that eliminate light.
