City of Berkley, CA, USA

Bird-Safe Berkeley Requirements (Mandatory)

The City’s Bird Safety requirements would apply to buildings classified as “New Construction” and that have “two (2) or more stories, and one or more façades in which glass constitutes fifty percent (50%) or more of the area of the individual façade.”

  • Windows that are greater than or equal to two by four feet (2’x4’) in size (or eight square feet) are required to install glazing on the façade.

  • Installation of new windows must meet the criteria referenced above.

  • The bird-safe glazing requirements mandate that 90% of the exterior building or glass structure must be treated with a bird friendly glazing to prevent bird collisions. Some other treatment options include:

    • External screens

    • Blinds or curtains that are light in colour.

    • Opaque or translucent glass or window film

    • Window deterrent markers that use dots, stripes, and patterns that may be etched, fritted, or applied to the glass to treat windows.
