How have you been coping with the cooler weather? Regardless of whether you’ve been enjoying some bird friendly activities or some of your favourite fall comfort foods, there’s no doubt that winter is just around the corner. However, it’s important to remember that during these colder months, birds are still susceptible to building collisions. In fact, the winter months can be especially difficult for birds as they contend with migration, food scarcity and harsh weather to survive.
If you’re wondering how you can start your bird-friendly journey, then you’ve come to the right place: today, we’ll be exploring how the team at Salthaven used Feather Friendly® bird deterrent markers to prevent bird-building collisions at their wildlife rehabilitation centre!
In addition to providing excellent resources for civilians and animal lovers, Salthaven is a well-known rehabilitation centre that is committed to rescuing and rehabilitating injured, sick and orphaned animals. Since its creation in 2004, the centre has opened a second location in Saskatchewan and has continued to rehabilitate animals and educate the public on the dangers that animals face in our human-centric environments.
Brian Salt, Salthaven’s founder, is captivated by the rich diversity of Canadian wildlife. He takes great pride in providing excellent education to the public and ensures that each volunteer is properly trained in wildlife care. In fact, Brian himself is certified by the International Wildlife Rehabilitation Council (IWRC) in Advanced Clinical Pathology and has served as a member of the Board of Directors for the Ontario Wildlife Rehabilitation and Education Network (OWREN). He maintains memberships at the National Wildlife Rehabilitation Association (NWRA) and the International Association of Avian Trainers and Educators (IAATE), too. Salthaven’s team can repair wings, heal broken bones, provide a refuge for weak and orphaned animals and assist injured wildlife in regaining their strength and autonomy. Above all though, Salthaven hopes to make education more accessible to humans so communities can learn how to better coexist with wildlife. This organization leads by example and continues to model consumer-friendly and bird-friendly advocacy in a variety of ways, such as installing Feather Friendly® bird deterrent markers on their building.
Because they regularly treat injured birds, Salthaven’s staff were shocked to discover that many birds were colliding with the windows at their own facility. When he realized that his windows were causing the same injuries that his organization treats, Brian Salt contacted Feather Friendly® to help him make his space safer for birds. Brian and his team were able to install the bird deterrent markers in under an hour and were delighted by its almost immediate effect. In addition to providing great protection against bird collisions, the window markers preserve the stunning view of Salthaven’s property from the interior windows.
